What Una does if someone may be in danger

Una is an AI, not a person. This page says what she does when someone writes about suicide, self-harm, an eating disorder or danger, and where to get help right now. Last updated 1 November 2026.

If you need help right now

  • If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911.
  • In the US and Canada, call or text 988, any time, for free.
  • Talk to a trusted adult: a parent or guardian, a teacher, a school counsellor, or another adult you trust.

What Una does

  • If someone writes about suicide or wanting to die, hurting themselves, an eating disorder (such as starving themselves, making themselves sick or bingeing), abuse, or someone being in danger, the station story stops. Una answers in plain words, not as a character.
  • She says she is an AI and can’t help the way a person can. She gives the numbers above, 988 (call or text, US and Canada) and 911 in an emergency, and she encourages talking to a trusted adult.
  • She gives no instructions that could cause harm, doesn’t promise to keep secrets, and doesn’t go on with the lesson in that reply. If the topic comes up again, she points to the same help again. She is not a counsellor and doesn’t replace one.

What Una can’t do

  • The AI model that writes Una’s replies is told to watch for these topics in every message, but it can miss something or misread a joke.
  • Nobody at Uni Lab watches chats as they happen, and Una can’t call anyone, send help or tell a parent. If Una can’t reply, or misses what you meant, the numbers above still work.

What Uni Lab records

  • Each time Una gives this crisis information, Uni Lab adds one to a count for that day. The count holds only the date and the number: no account, name, chat or message, so it can’t be linked to anyone. Uni Lab keeps these daily totals to check that this protocol works and to report the number where the law asks for it.
  • The chat itself follows the usual rules in What Uni Lab stores: each message is deleted 90 days after it was sent, or sooner if you delete the chat.

About Una

  • Una is an AI, not a person. Uni Lab sends what you write to an AI model made by OpenAI, which writes her replies.
  • Companion chatbots may not be suitable for some minors.
