What Uni Lab stores

Uni Lab is an invited trial run by one person. This page says what the app keeps about you, for how long, and what reaches the AI that answers as Una. Last updated 1 November 2026.

Una, smiling and listening

Your account

  • An account name chosen with the person who runs Uni Lab, and a password (stored only as a one-way hash). No email address, real name, phone number, school or age is collected or asked for.
  • A sign-in session cookie that lasts 8 hours. Uni Lab uses no analytics, advertising or tracking cookies.
  • Forgotten passwords are reset by the person who runs Uni Lab, in person or over a channel you both already use.

What you write and make

  • Chats with Una, including the questions and explanations you send in lessons. Each message is deleted 90 days after it was sent, or as soon as you delete the chat. A deleted chat cannot be reopened and is removed from online storage within 24 hours.
  • Your latest draft of each lesson activity (Python code, assistant instructions, captions). Drafts stay until you reset them or your account is deleted; there is no edit history.
  • Your participation records, earned awards and course exam scores. They stay with your account and do not depend on chats. Nothing here is a grade of you as a person.
  • Feedback you send through the Feedback page, with any excerpt you chose to attach. Reports are deleted 90 days after submission.
  • When Una gives crisis-line information (see Safety), Uni Lab adds one to a count for that day. The count holds only the date and the number: no account, name, chat or message.

What reaches the AI

  • Una’s replies come from a single AI provider, OpenAI, through its API. When you send a message, Una receives that message, Uni Lab’s own notes on how Uni Lab works, the relevant lesson material, your attached work (for example your code and its labelled run result) and a bounded number of recent messages from the same chat, each marked as yours or Una’s. In a course lesson she can also receive the title and problem of the card you are on, but never during an exam. Nothing is sent when you only edit, save or run code.
  • OpenAI says it does not use data sent through its API to train its models unless the app’s owner opts in to sharing it.
  • Uni Lab turns off OpenAI’s option to keep each request and reply for later retrieval. OpenAI still keeps abuse-monitoring logs, which can include your messages and Una’s replies, for up to 30 days, or longer if the law requires it or it is needed to protect people or its service from harm. Uni Lab cannot delete those logs.
  • To answer requests faster, OpenAI may keep a cache of the request on its machines for up to 24 hours. Most of Una’s requests are long enough for this, because Uni Lab adds its own notes on how Uni Lab works. The cache is an encrypted, processed form of the text, not the text itself. Other OpenAI customers cannot use it, and Uni Lab cannot clear it early.
  • Una does not browse the web, does not see your other chats, and never asks for personal details. Please keep names, addresses and other personal information out of what you type.

Where and who

  • The application and its database run on one server in Canada operated for the person who runs Uni Lab. Nightly backups are kept on that server for 14 days and deleted afterwards.
  • Only the person who runs Uni Lab can access accounts, and only to help with sign-in, to review feedback, or to delete an account on request. They do not read chats as a matter of routine.
  • To delete your account and everything linked to it, ask the person who invited you. Deletion removes your chats, drafts, progress, awards and feedback; it does not recall data already processed by the AI provider.

Who Uni Lab is for

  • This trial is for invited learners aged 14 and over who read English. If you are under the age of majority where you live, your parent or guardian should know you are taking part and can ask the same questions or request deletion.
  • Una is an AI, not a person. Companion chatbots may not be suitable for some minors.
  • What Una does if someone may be in danger, and where to get help right now: Safety.
  • Questions or concerns: use the Feedback page after signing in, or contact the person who invited you.
